Consultation on MedicinesA pair of classes of medications that should be used only in consultation with one’s lap band specialist following the Lap Band procedure is diuretics (fluid pills) and NSAIDs (most over-the-counter pain medicines). NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen, etc.) can send patients on a road to ulcers in the small pouch or the attached bowel. A large number of diuretic medicines make the kidneys lose potassium. With the dramatically reduced intake experienced by many lap band surgery patients, they are not able to take in the required amount of potassium from food to compensate. When potassium levels fall too low, an individual can be faced with fatal heart issues.
